Battery Dance was founded in 1976 in Manhattan by Jonathan Hollander, who continues to lead the company, combining artistic excellence with a social mission.

The aim: to create a lasting social impact on the lives of young people by fostering human connection, regardless of background or social status. Dance should be accessible to everyone!

Battery Dance achieves this through:

  1. Providing affordable studio space
  2. Offering programmes for New York City schools,
  3. Hosting the annual New York Downtown Festival, an open-air event featuring international soloists and groups.
  4. Award-winning international programmes, such as Dancing to Connect and Dancing to Trust, which began in 2006 with “Dances for the Blue House” in Freiburg and Breisach and have since been conducted in more than 50 countries, including Nigeria and Germany (Bremen, Halle) in 2023.
