As part of the project, historians were commissioned to address central research questions on the history of the Upper Rhine region during the time of National Socialism. The deportation of the Jews from Baden to Gurs and their connection to the de facto annexation of Alsace lies at the center of this research, as well as the expulsion of the Alsatian Jewish population and the history of other groups of people whose fates were closely bound to the railway lines along the Upper Rhine.

The results of the research were displayed and discussed at conferences, lectures, and publications. They form an important basis for the pedagogic and artistic components of the project
